Locals take part in Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run

September 3, 2009 - 03:40 a.m. EST

A number of residents from northeast lower Michigan are taking part Monday, in the 6th annual Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run.

The run, started by Governor Jennifer Granholm, begins at 7 a.m., preceding the 52nd annual Mackinac Bridge Walk. The run is limited to 300 participants who were selected from a lottery drawing in June.

Five of the runners will represent northeast lower Michigan. The list includes: Erik Kiste of Alcona County; Donald Clay and Bob Sehn of Alpena County; John Fallot of Montmorency County; and Richard Voltz of Presque Isle County.

Participants were required to participate in at least one running event endorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness.

The annual Mackinac Bridge Walk began on Labor Day in 1958 and draws approximately 50,000 Michigan residents each year.

A lottery to run? What a bunch of overachievers! I will be spending the day eating BBQ and Strawberry Shortcake, with a few naps mixed in here and there. Will the runners be awarded prizes? Or is running the only prize? Anyway, good luck to the local runners. I'll save some shortcake for you.
