Alpena trooper not part of recall

November 16, 2009 - 06:05 a.m. EST

When 55 State Police Troopers return to work Monday, Alpena’s newest recruit will not be among them.

The state budget signed into law by Governor Granholm at the end of October restored funding for 55 of the 100 troopers who were originally laid off in June.

The layoffs were blamed on declining state revenue and included Trooper Robert Mitchell who was assigned to the Alpena Post after graduating from trooper school in December of 2008.

Post Commander F/Lt. Mike Caldwell said Trooper Mitchell is not one of the troopers returning to work because he lacks seniority. Caldwell also said there are no plans at this time to recall Mitchell or the other 44 troopers who remain on layoff.

When the recalled troopers return to work on Monday, it will bring to 1,000 the total number of troopers in Michigan.
