Veteran’s Day…events planned for Little Flanders Field

November 11, 2009 - 03:43 a.m. EST

Today is Veterans Day…a day devoted to the men and women of the U.S. armed forces and those killed in battle.

Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day is always recognized on November 11th, and was originally chosen to commemorate the end of World War I, in 1918. After World War II it was recognized as a day to pay tribute to all service members, and in 1954 it was designated as Veterans Day.

An annual ceremony of events is being held at 11 o’clock this morning, at Little Flanders Field in Alpena. Some of the events include the laying of wreaths and a rifle salute. The guest speaker will be Col. Ewin Sansom of the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

Dave Smith is receiving the Veteran of the Year Award.

Alpena Public Schools is hosting its annual Veterans Day assembly at 9:30 this morning, at the high school.

Remember: It was the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It was the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It was the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us the right to demonstrate. It is the Veteran who salutes the flag. Who served under the flag. Whose coffin is draped by the flag. Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Well said Granny5. That sums it up. If you appreciate your freedoms, simply thank a veteran.
