The Alpena Exchange Club recognized students for their patriotism last night, at its annual “Proudly We Hail” program.

Fourth and 5th grade students from area schools showed their love of country by writing essays and expressing their own definition of patriotism.

More than one thousand entries were submitted and personally read by organizer Mike Summers. Ten lucky students received plaques for their efforts.

Students were asked what they think of when the see the American Flag and what it means to them.

The answers were as varied as the students themselves. Caitlyn Reinhard, a 4th grader from Sunset School wrote in her winning entry, “When I look at the American Flag I see freedom and liberty and the ability to achieve all of my goals.”
