ARMC goes tobacco-free

November 20, 2008 - 03:52 a.m. EST

No more smoking is allowed outside Alpena Regional Medical Center (ARMC) or near your parked vehicle.

Starting Thursday ARMC is a smoke-free, tobacco-free campus. Thursday is also the Great American Smoke-out.

Over the past year, ARMC has been holding informative sessions with staff, physicians and volunteers leading up to Thursday's “go-live” date.

“Our staff requested we give them a long lead-in time to transition to a tobacco-free campus,” said Judy MacNeill, ARMC Employee Wellness Coordinator. “To honor their feelings, we spent the last year helping those who wanted to quit, quit, and those who wanted to manage their day tobacco-free the tools to effectively accomplish this.”

Effective Thursday, all tobacco use will be prohibited at all hospital buildings and grounds, including vehicles and property owned or leased by ARMC and parking areas.

Many other hospitals in the state are, or will be, tobacco-free as requested by the Michigan Hospital Association.
