The cost to skate at Northern Lights Arena is going up.
The Alpena County Board of Commissioners approved, Tuesday, a rate hike of $10 an hour for prime and non-prime ice time. Various user groups will now pay $105 an hour to skate before 3 p.m., Monday through Friday; and $170 to skate after 3 p.m. and on weekends.
The increases are expected to cover anticipated hikes in electricity and natural gas costs, which are a large part of the arena’s budget.
The new rates take effect September 1, but still must be approved by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
The arena was partially built with the help of a DNR grant that requires all cost increases to pass through it before taking effect.
