High E-coli levels close Rogers City beach
A health advisory has been issued for Lakeside Park Beach in Rogers City.
Recent water samples from the beach contain high levels of E-coli bacteria.
Swimming at the beach is not advised until further notice.
District Health Department #4 will be conducting additional tests and monitoring the results. Health officials say unusually high levels of bacteria seem to occur after heavy rains and can be attributed to a high level of waterfowl activity along the shoreline.
Animal & bird droppings can be washed into storm drains from residential neighborhood streets and yards and then be flushed into lakes.
Children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are most likely to develop illnesses or infections after coming into contact with contaminated water, usually while swimming.
