The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says five organizations in the state will be getting nearly $250,000 for projects that focus on the disposal of unused household drugs.

The Community Pollution Prevention grants are designed to increase public access to free drug collection programs and to help develop successful disposal programs that can be implemented in other areas of the state.

The Great Lakes Clean Water Organization has been awarded $77,125.  The non-profit organization headquartered in Barton City will use some of the money for advertising.  It started the Yellow Jug Old Drugs program, which works with pharmacies across the state to collect and properly dispose of unwanted or unused drugs.

Other organizations receiving awards include the Macomb County Health Department, the Crawford County Commission on Aging, the Ingham County Health Department and the Kent County Department of Public Works.
