Local sports round-up for June 11

Softball

Alpena’s softball season came to a close in a Division 1 Regional Championship game at Saginaw Valley State University. The Wildcats defeated Lapeer West, 3 to 2, in the semi-final but lost to Swartz Creek in the title game.

Rogers City lost, 6 to 1, to Rapid River in a Division 4 Regional title game in Sault Ste. Marie. The Hurons beat Rudyard, 11 to 0, in the semi-final game.

Posen’s season ended with a regional semi-final loss, 2 to 1, to Rapid River.

Mio held on for a  2 to 0 win against Ubly in regional semi-final action but lost, 11 to 2, to Bay City All Saints in the regional title game.

Baseball

Rogers City lost to Rudyard, 8 to 4, in regional semi-final play in Sault Ste. Marie.

Alcona’s season also came to an end in regional semi-final play. The Tigers lost to Kingston, 9 to 3, at All Saints High School in Bay City.

Several area student-athletes were named in Sunday’s Detroit Free Press as being among the best scholar-athletes in the state. Those making the list, published yesterday, include: Onaway’s Faith Chapman, Mio-Au Sable’s Grant Price, Hillman’s Jordan VanPamel, and Alcona’s Andrew Chamberlain.
