A former employee of Walmart in Alpena is making her way through the court system for allegedly defrauding a customer in need.

In November, 2011, a man asked former employee Shannon Michelle Arlt to assist him in using his debit card at one of the self-help checkout stations.

Arlt proceeded to help the man, who was confused and wasn’t sure how the debit card machine worked.  She punched in some of the numbers for the man and when asked if the customer wanted cash back, Arlt punched in $80 without the man knowing.  She later turned in $40 to the store, but pocketed the other half.

Arlt pleaded guilty this week, to a single count of illegally using a financial transaction device (debit card).  In exchange a second charge was dismissed.  Under the terms of the plea agreement, she is expected to receive a one-year delayed sentence and could have the charge against her lowered if she stays out of further trouble over the one-year period.

Arlt will be sentenced June 18.
