Alpena officials accept MML award – Waligora in Lansing
Alpena City Mayor Matt Waligora and Manager Thad Taylor were in Lansing this week. Below is a portion of a letter Waligora sent to the media on his travels.
LETTER FROM MATT WALIGORA:
Thad Taylor and I traveled to Lansing for the annual MML (Michigan Municipal League) Capital Conference held on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Some of the highlights of our trip include:
Alpena won the Region 6 Community Excellence Award for the US-23 Art Trail Road Map and Passport to the Arts project. We now move on to the final round presentation at the annual convention in October for the State Title.
In addition to seminars on Health Care, EVIP, Green Government, current legislation, etc, Thad and I took every opportunity to network with other communities to discuss issues and successes.
I had a brief discussion regarding air service with the Mayor pro-tem of Manistee and set up what should be continued contact with their community. We had a meeting with Senator Moolenaar and his aides in response to the letter that I sent them requesting his support in securing another round of bids for EAS funding. He has pledged to support us with a written letter to the DOT.
I spoke with Congressman Beneshek’s aide and scheduled a call with him for Thursday morning regarding the same. The responses from our elected officials were directly related to the letter that I presented to city council on Monday evening… I was informed that our federal representatives are releasing a cooperative letter of support to the DOT.
I have not received any indication from the DOT as to when they might be making their final decision on the matter of our current bid cycle.
I continue to spread the word on the dangers of synthetic drugs and the lack of legislation provided for banning the sale of them. I do understand that this is not an easy task for our lawmakers, but the team effort is building momentum. MML Legislative Associate Samantha Harkins, Representative Peter Pettalia, the House and Senate, and the Governor’s office have all been working for us in Lansing. And there are several individuals working in Alpena.
To my knowledge, Alpena is the leader in Michigan in fighting this battle.
The MML Conference was rewarding, informative, and beneficial to the City of Alpena.
