An Alpena man recently stood mute to drug charges stemming from a January undercover investigation.

Scott Eugene Swindle, 27, is charged with conspiracy to deliver heroin and as a third habitual offender.  Swindle and 23 year-old Joseph Baker of Alpena were allegedly waiting on a downstate delivery of heroin when they were busted on January 21.

By standing mute, a not guilty plea has been entered on behalf of Swindle, who is also facing an outstanding marijuana charge from October 2009.  Baker has already accepted a plea offer and will be sentenced in the near future.

Charles Costello of Flint and Steven Savage of Bridgeport were the two men carrying the drugs from downstate.  Costello and Savage were greeted by the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team when they arrived in Alpena by bus.  In April, they were both sentenced to a minimum of 23 months in prison.

Boy this is getting old. What ever happened to the 3 strike law? If this makes it to my kids somehow someone needs to pay.

Agreed. It would be worth taxpayers money to keep him locked up for a serious stretch.

No wonder it’s easy to deal drugs in Alpena. 23 months? They’ll be out in 7. Heroin must be too dangerous to prosecute.
