The Alpena area will be well represented when the Michigan Port Collaborative Spring 2010 Summit is held next week.

The mission of the Michigan Port Collaborative is to elevate the recognition and economic vitality of the state’s port communities while protecting and promoting the Great Lakes and developing the coast as “Michigan’s Front Door.”

Harbormaster Don Gilmet will be representing the City of Alpena at the summit, which is being held next Thursday and Friday in Muskegon.  Lee Shirey, Executive Director of Target Alpena Development Corporation will also be in attendance, representing the region.

Gilmet, Rogers City Mayor Beach Hall and East Tawas Tax Increment Financing Authority Director Helen Pasakarnis make up the port collaborative steering committee for northeast lower Michigan.

The port collaborative is a diverse membership of public and private sector representatives of Michigan’s Great Lakes’ port communities.

What economic vitality? The marina in Alpena is a money pit and should be sold or closed. The boating industry is history. Anyone that can still afford to boat will not come into Alpena and dock their boat under a sewer plant and the stench of the wood processing plant. Not one single penny of tax payer money should be spent on the dinosaur city marina!
