Truck falls into Grand Lake – steel cable to pull it out stolen

Police say the steel cable used to pull a truck out of Grand Lake Thursday, was stolen.

Authorities believe the driver of the truck was “looking for a little adventure” when he drove onto the lake and fell through the ice.  The incident occurred at the public boat launch off Highway 638 in Krakow Township.

Police said the driver initially drove through open water to get up onto the ice and subsequently broke though in about 5-feet of water, approximately 100 yards from shore.

It took two days to pull the truck out of the lake because it kept breaking through the ice as crews tried to pull it out.  A steel cable that was used to pull the truck was left attached to the vehicle and stolen during the overnight hours.

Michigan State Police and officers from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment continue to investigate the incident.

Stupidity at its finest. Congratulations. You all should be very proud of yourself. I hope the DNR whacks the owner with a huge fine. Maybe that will keep these people off the ice with their trucks.

What’s your problem with people driving trucks on the ice? Your probably one of those people that sit around watching for people having “too much fun” and then call the DNR/Police on them aren’t you? So, this guy/girl was having some fun and fell through. Pay the towing bill and move on. Why does the DNR even need to be involved let alone issue a fine??

I don’t have a problem with people driving on the ice but when you have to cross open water to get onto the ice? Really? Plus this vehicle was sitting there for 2 days. In five feet of water. There is the possibility of fluid leakage and that is a DNR matter. There comes a point when you have use common sense. This is a case of the lack thereof.

I agree this may not have been the brightest thing to do but generally the ice breaks up at shore early and there is still close to 2′ of good ice a little ways out from shore. I wouldn’t have thought it would be very likely to fall threw 100 yards from shore. Even if the entire gas tank, all of the tranny fluid, and diff. lube would’ve leaked out into the lake it would have been miniscule compared to what is leaked from boats every summer. This is just another nonsense fine the DNR issues to suck money out of people. I mean seriously, the guy already had a huge towing bill to pay and lost his vehicle…

I guess I don’t care if someone wants to drive a 3,000 pound vehicle on a lake when there is 12 inches of ice, but this guy drove through open water…and THEN expected the ice to hold the weight of his vehicle!?! Seriously. I guess that is fun. So is sticking your finger into an open light socket. I just wish there was a moron message board where these people posted their intentions to do dumb things. I would have died laughing while watching these people swim back in. I would have even paid for an admission ticket.

What’s even more pathetic is the tow cable got stolen. I see melting ice attracts the brightest people from our community. I guess I’m the mean guy though. Everyone else wants to feel sorry for this person.

I don’t feel sorry for him, but I’m sure he knew what could happen and took the risk. Whether it was to try and go fishing, or he was just playing around, either way it doesn’t make him an idiot. I just don’t agree with the DNR having to get involved and slap him with another useless fine. I mean if they were going to contain the area and clean it up or something that actually cost money that would be different but there not doing anything. Just standing around watching and collecting money. Im not saying your mean either, just respectfully disagreeing with you.

It’s funny, because if he isn’t smart enough to know the law on what can happen driving on the ice then he shouldn’t be driving. And then these guys do this and go through and people make excuses for them (and of course blame the law)??? There is one person to blame for this whole idiotic incident and that is the driver. Nobody else. Period. Certainly not the DNR for doing the job they are told to do.
