Leaders of the Huron Humane Society in Alpena say the economy has forced many people to give up their pets and the animal shelter is busier than ever.

Representatives stood in front of the Alpena Municipal Council Monday, asking for $17,000 in support of their operation, which includes housing stray animals.  Last year the humane society asked the city for $20,000 and received $14,000, a reduction from 2008.

Councilman Sam Eiler, a long time advocate of  animals, thanked the society for its hard work.

The funding request was forwarded to city staff who will now look at the new fiscal year budget and determine how much money the humane society will receive.  The recommendation will go back to city council for final approval.
